Fourteen days of nature and culture

This epic route winds past volcanic lakes, encounters with the Hadzabe, Datoga and Maasai, the famous Ngorongoro Crater and the endless plains of the Serengeti: the richest of Tanzania in one journey.

Like every Kembe journey, this route is a starting point: longer at Lake Natron, climbing Oldoinyo Lengai or finishing on Zanzibar. We adapt everything to your wishes.

On arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport your guide welcomes you and takes you to a lodge in Arusha. Enjoy a relaxed evening to recover from the journey and prepare for your safari adventure.

Game drive & walking safari

Arusha National Park

The journey begins in Arusha National Park, famous for its varied landscape, from green forest to open savannah, with views of majestic Mount Meru. During the game drive you spot giraffes, buffalo and monkeys, and in the afternoon you take a walk with a ranger: ideal for exploring the smaller wonders of nature.

Lake Natron & flamingos

A surreal landscape

Lake Natron & flamingos

You travel to extraordinary Lake Natron: bright red waters, an enormous flamingo population and a rugged landscape ringed by volcanoes and gorges. Two days full of adventure and natural splendour:

Volcano

Take in Ol Doinyo Lengai, the Maasai’s ‘mountain of God’ and the only active carbonatite volcano in the world.

Waterfall

Visit the Engaresero waterfalls and cool off in naturally flowing water.

View

Walk to a nearby rock formation for a panoramic view over the lake.

From Lake Natron to Lake Eyasi

Straight through the rift valley

From Lake Natron to Lake Eyasi

Today you drive to Lake Eyasi, the homeland of the Hadzabe and Datoga. The Hadzabe are one of Africa’s last hunter-gatherer communities; the Datoga are known for their metalwork and craftsmanship. Along the way you take in the ever-changing landscape of the Rift Valley.

The Hadzabe and Datoga

The morning is devoted to the daily life of the Hadzabe and the Datoga: hunting, gathering and making tools. You can join a hunting trip with the Hadzabe or watch the Datoga’s blacksmithing techniques up close. In the afternoon you drive to Karatu.

Catching your breath

Karatu & coffee tour

After a quiet morning in Karatu you can join a coffee tour and learn all about local coffee production. In the afternoon you relax in the green hills around the town or visit the local market: the perfect breather halfway through your trip.

Ngorongoro Crater

Ngorongoro Crater

Today you drive to the impressive Ngorongoro Crater. On arrival you visit a Maasai community and learn about their traditional way of life, ceremonies and strong connection with the land. Then you descend to the crater floor for a game drive among an incredible concentration of wildlife, including the Big Five.

Serengeti National Park

Serengeti National Park

You drive to the Serengeti, one of the most iconic national parks in the world. For two days you take game drives through the park: a chance of the famous migration of wildebeest, zebras and gazelles, and predators in action, from the Big Five to rarer species.

Serengeti: spotting predators

Two extra days to really explore the vast plains. The Serengeti is famous for its predators, so these game drives are ideal for spotting lions, cheetahs and leopards, and for discovering the more hidden corners of the park.

Back to Arusha & departure

Journey home

Back to Arusha & departure

After a final morning game drive you say goodbye to the savannah and drive back to Arusha. There you relax at your lodge, enjoy a last African sunset and perhaps buy some souvenirs. The next morning you are taken to the airport, with a wealth of memories.
